Jeopardy! icon and longtime host Alex Trebek died on November 8, 2020, following a battle with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Trebek announced he was diagnosed with the disease in March 2019 and, in a video message to fans, vowed to beat the disease, which has a five-year survival rate of 1 percent. He maintained a positive attitude throughout the past year and even continued to produce new episodes of the popular game show. His last-ever episode as host was scheduled to air on December 25.

A native of Canada, Trebek began working at the CBC network in 1960 and later hosted shows such as Pick and Choose and Music Hop. He began hosting Jeopardy! in 1984. During his 36-year tenure as host of the show, Trebek won six Daytime Emmy Awards as Outstanding Game Show Host, while the show itself garnered 16 Daytime Emmys. Trebek won a Peabody Award in 2012 and, in 2018, was made an officer of the Order of Canada.
